I1 – Intermediate Foundations (15 weeks)

I1 transitions students from beginner repertoire into true violin study by strengthening technique, expanding note reading, and introducing expressive playing. Students develop:

  • Confident first-position playing across all four strings
  • Smooth string crossings and improved bow distribution
  • Two-octave major scales with greater intonation awareness
  • Introduction to slurs, articulations, and expressive dynamics
  • More advanced rhythm patterns including dotted rhythms and syncopation
  • Greater independence in music reading and practice habits

Repertoire includes:

  • Lightly Row
  • Long, Long Ago
  • Minuet No. 1 (J.S. Bach, Suzuki arrangement)
  • Chorus from Judas Maccabaeus (Handel)

This level develops technical consistency, expressive tone, and confidence performing complete musical works.

I2 – Developing Musicianship (20 weeks)

I2 expands both technical fluency and musical interpretation while introducing new bow strokes and more demanding repertoire. Students develop:

  • Strong first-position technique with increased speed and accuracy
  • Advanced scale studies in multiple major and minor keys
  • Introduction to simple shifting between first and third position
  • Beginning vibrato preparation exercises
  • Detaché, legato, and beginning martelé bow strokes
  • Musical phrasing, articulation, and stylistic interpretation

Repertoire includes:

  • Gavotte (Gossec)
  • Hunters’ Chorus (Weber)
  • Musette (Bach)
  • Bourrée (Handel)

This level builds confidence, technical control, and expressive musicianship while preparing students for more advanced violin literature.

I3 – Intermediate Performance (20 weeks)

I3 prepares students for advanced technical study through greater technical independence and artistic expression. Students strengthen:

  • Secure shifting between first and third position
  • Consistent beginning vibrato in repertoire
  • Three-octave scale preparation
  • Faster string crossings and coordinated left- and right-hand technique
  • More advanced bow distribution, dynamics, and tone colors
  • Independent musical interpretation and ensemble awareness

Repertoire includes:

  • Concerto in A Minor, 1st Movement (Vivaldi – simplified)
  • Gavotte from Mignon (Thomas)
  • Humoresque (Dvořák)
  • Minuet in G (Beethoven)

This level prepares students for advanced repertoire through refined technique, expressive playing, and increased musical maturity.
